Purple Cupcakes Majesty

Not to toot my own horn, or anything, but I made some pretty tasty purple cupcakes for Caroline’s class yesterday. 

One little girl came up to me and said ‘ I usually don’t like the cake part of the cupcake, but I really liked yours.’  How sweet is that?  But, in the spirit of full disclosure, I used a boxed mix.  Scratch frosting, but a boxed mix.   Even I, your humble baker, am not capable of willing to whip up 30 scratch cupcakes at 5 am.

She was sweet though.  Chloe K., you’re now my very favorite.

All that adoration is good for my baker’s ego and all, but what really matters is that the birthday girl and her classmates enjoyed them.

All week long we we knew there was a good chance of snow on Thursday night.  If it had snowed enough to warrant the cancellation of school on Friday, I didn’t want to run the risk of baking 30 cupcakes on Thursday night and then having 30 uneaten cupcakes staring at me, taunting me and begging for me to eat them.

By Thursday night, the snow chance had dwindled quite drastically, but, given the unpredictability of the weather, I still didn’t want to be stuck with too many tempting cupcakes.  I am weak in the face of buttercream.  So, instead, I woke up at 5 am on Friday morning to bake.

Because I’m a selfless mother.

When you consider what I was doing at 5 am on January 21, 2002, baking cupcakes before the sun rises doesn’t seem so bad, after all.

We have more cupcakes to bake for the party tonight because the birthday girl prefers chocolate cake.  However, for those who don’t like chocolate, we have a few leftover cupcakes from yesterday. 

The party goodies are out:  a candle in the shape of a 9, cupcake liners and a cookie cutter for the sugar cookies with royal icing I’m attempting once again.  This time I shall conquer the royal icing.

We even have tie-dyed butterfly sprinkles

and these cool decorative cupcake wraps.

In other news, when Caroline woke up yesterday and got over the fact that 1.) it didn’t snow and 2.) she had to go to school on time because it didn’t snow, I asked her what she wanted for her birthday breakfast.  Without a second of hesitation, she chose chocolate chip pancakes.   Even though I’m morally opposed to chocolate chip pancakes, I obliged her birthday wish.  Because, again, I’m selfless like that.

Here’s the thing:  I like pancakes and I like chocolate chips,  I just do not believe they belong together.  I like syrup on pancakes and to me, syrup and chocolate chips are not a likely, nor palatable pair.  Caroline likes the chocolate chip/syrup combo, but she’s a kid and sugar coated in sugar,  topped with sugar and sprinkled with sugar is a way of life for a 9 year old.

Don’t worry, though,  she had fruit, too. 

Ugh, that’s a horrid picture.  Early morning light is no good.

Anyway, we have a busy day ahead of us.  Caroline has a basketball game this morning and then we have a party to throw.  We have more cupcakes to bake, balloons to purchase and decorations to put up.

The troops arrive at 4:30 for a night of crafts, pizza, fruit skewers, fruit smoothies, cupcakes and, of course, Cheetos.  No party is complete without out them. 

I’m sure plenty of shenanigans will ensue, as well.

  1. Ha! You're too sweet.Not to burst your bubble, but I wrote that post yesterday afternoon and scheduled it to published at 5 am. Does that change your opinion of me? ;)For future reference, when Baby Fia turns 9, do not host a slumber party for 7 of his/her friends. I can handle 4 or 5, but 8 is TOO MANY. Too. Many.Trust me, I know of what I speak.Yikes.
